Part of the “Sorcerer & Apprentice” companion piece set (1/2)
Yen Sid is one of those classic characters at the foundation of Disney's legacy. I felt that Yen Sid, with his silent, stately, and timeless demeanor, was the perfect subject for a formal portrait.
In this oil painting, I used a layering technique called glazing—a technique of applying thin, transparent layers of paint (glazes) over a dry, previously painted surface—to help create the glow that emanates from the sorcerer's hat. Regarding posing & composition, Yen Sid’s outstretched arm creates a leading line down to his hat and vice versa back to his face, where an expression of contentment is shown. I posed him in this way to suggest a keen sense of pride in his craft.
