This is a portrait a bit unlike anything I'd done before, especially because its subject, Simba, is so small in the composition. Of course, this is by design. Here, a young Simba is depicted contemplating his future as king, following the tragic loss of his dad. The figure of Mufasa is suggested via a background cloud, a symbol of Simba's potential, as well as Mufasa's unending support of his son. Due to forced perspective, the Mufasa cloud appears to be the same size relative to Simba as Mufasa would be while alive. Because of this, this scene becomes a reflection of the moment when Simba and Mufasa, father and son, first sat at the edge of the rock. I included a suggestion of a sunrise (or sunset, open to interpretation), to connote change and hope.
