Mickey dons his mentor's hat with the thought of becoming like him: a poised and capable figure, dignified and stately; in this companion piece, Sorcerer Mickey poses like Yen Sid.
It's funny to us, in a way, for Sorcerer Mickey to act like this, to pretend to be like Yen Sid, because, in pretending to be his mentor, his senior by far, Sorcerer Mickey exposes his own naivete. But this portrait tells a slightly different story. This depiction highlights Sorcerer Mickey's admiration for his mentor and his excitement for his own potential. Along these lines, to me, it was important not to include any sense of pride in Sorcerer Mickey's demeanor. What's shown instead is a purity and innocence that make the character so endearing; apprentice Sorcerer Mickey is simply happy to be where he is. I think he would make a great sorcerer one day.
