When I decided to paint a portrait of Stitch, I wanted to focus more on Stitch as Experiment 626, before he was found by Lilo and given his name. This is really how I came to know the character. When I first started to study storyboarding, my first task was to break down the sequence where Stitch, as 626, emerged from his crashed ship and explored Earth for the first time. My analysis of that sequence was a pivotal moment in the development of my love for storytelling. It was also when Stitch became my favorite character to draw.
626 posing upside-down highlights how, at this point in his story, Stitch is still different from everyone else—this was my original vision for this piece. However, since there is no up or down in space, it is also possible to hang the painting upside-down, with 626 appearing right side up to the viewer; this painting was designed so that it could work in both cases.
