Oil on linen | 24 × 18 in. (61 × 45.7 cm)
Part of a "Princesses" series (ongoing)
The idea for this painting started while I was studying the lighting condition known as diffuse neutral light, which allows one to see the true, natural color of materials, unchanged by direct sunlight. With Snow White's portrait, I wanted to emphasize the humility of her character through posing—she is "fairest of them all," yet in her royal portrait, she looks away from the viewer in introspection. I felt that this was the most fitting way to depict her, humble and demure.
Expressive, textural brushwork and subtle transitions between warm and cool colors make up the background of this painting. Varying degrees of contrast—in this instance, the relative lightness and darkness of the colors—in the figure's hair, skin, collar, and dress, weave Snow White in between the foreground and background.
