Ariel looks up toward the light of the world outside of the water, the place that captured her curiosity. I painted this piece in such a way that Ariel would be immersed in light, a suggestion of her hope, imagination, and excitement for the discoveries waiting for her above.
Color and light are affected in unusual ways underwater. For example, warm colors (yellows, oranges, reds) quickly fade the deeper you go. Because I wanted to preserve the warmth of Ariel's hair and complexion, I placed her fairly close to the surface of the water, giving her hair some vibrant reds and her complexion a softer, pastel-like quality. This also benefited the story component, as placing Ariel closer to the surface allowed more light to reach her.
